The route was once Belfast’s main thoroughfare
from the banks of the Lagan to the Town Hall which lay
at the junction of Bridge Street and Waring Street, and
in the mid 1600’s a tenement block stood there as
the first terraced building in Belfast, providing accommodation
to the Potthouse workers.

Potthouse open space provided a communal area for everyday
domestic duties, essentially the backyard.
